I've mainly been on livejournal but due to possible shut-down I wanted to start using my ij. So multiple re-posts to follow but all new posts are mirrored on my lj under the same user name if anyone is interested.

Stolen from yin_again(including post title which I altered for my own amusement) ( The Microfic Meme ) Mon, Jan. 5th, 2009, 06:44 pm 30 for 30 Masterlist

So I've been doing a little thinking and every year I say I'm going to write more and I never do. In 2008 I meant to do my Lost Moments series and my Kink Bongo card both of which are languishing in the shadowy corner of my desk. I do have idea for most of my bingo card and about 20 eps of Lost Moments but nothing written bar what I've already published. Well this year I'm turning thirty (OMG!!!) and I decided that as part of my personal goals for this year (and part of my 100 Thing to Live By list) I'm going to write 30,000 words for my 30th Birthday. It can be in any fandom and each story can be any length but by 4th September 209 I have to have written 30,000 words. I'm going to use this post to catalogue all fic and keep a running total of word count. Fingers crossed it will work. ( The Fic )Total: 180 of 30,000 words completed. I've been meaning to write this list down for a long time, nearly three years in fact. On 4th March 2006 I was in a car accident. It was pretty bad but I walked away with only some bruising and a few scratches. The car, was totaled. We crashed through a fence and some trees, the windows along the driver's side and the rear window smashed on impact, the car over-turned and the engine caught fire. We eventually came to a stop at a forty-five degree angle to the ground... but as I said, I walked away. When the fire brigade pulled the car out there was a huge gouge the whole length of the drivers side - my side - from where a young tree had snapped and gouged it's way into the car on impact. If the car had turned a few degrees more - if we been going a tiny bit faster or slower - the tree would have come in the window and things would have been a whole lot more serious. I tell you this not to elicit sympathy or shock but to help you understand what I was thinking as I stood there watching the car being pulled out. I realised that I'd walked away for a reason, and it was not to live the life I was leading. Most people have a list of things they want to do before they die, personally I think you've got to think about your life while you have it not what you'll regret at the end. Hence, this list and it's title. So 101 things to live by. This is about a lifetime of things so some are simple enough and some take time and that's okay. I figure I'll do three or four a year and add to it along the way. Feel free to steal and make it your own. This is about life and living it to the full. So I was just going to post a little bit about this but once I started I couldn't stop.
The one thing I have to say is whether you liked the ep or not the fic is going to be amazing. It did feel a little strange to put an episode like this as the penultimate of a series even if they didn't know it was finishing at the time but I have a feeling it will fuel the fandom a lot. Personally I though the ep was okay. Not amazing. There were a lot of things I both liked and disliked but all in all I enjoyed the episode. ( Here's the list (SPOILERS) ) Now, I'm off to find out who the new Doctor is. ::squee::

So I'm back.
I had a brilliant New Years Eve and I am looking forward to 2009. I also haven't had a cigarette yet. It's not a resolution because I don't really do the resolution thing but not smoking is good so I think I'm gonna keep it up. Now I have to catch up on skip=240 and 458 emails. ::blink:: Wow, you guys were busy. In other news, has anyone heard that BBC are going to annouce the 11th Doctor tomorrow!!! There are no spoilers in the article but what's most interesting is the gender neutral words in use. It could be a ploy to keep us guessing but honeslty a female doctor, while interesting, would just seem wrong. ETA: Happy New Year - Atlantis Style by rhymer23 Wed, Dec. 31st, 2008, 02:03 pm

Happy New Year one and all! Post every day this month DONE! Tue, Dec. 30th, 2008, 02:37 pm I gotta get out of this place!

Just letting you guys know I'm heading out of town for a few days. Just something I need to do to get away from being dumped and all the crap going on here at the moment. I know it'll end up causing other problems because there is a family thing that I should go to but fuck it I just gotta go. Anyway I'll probably be internet-less so if I don't get a chance to pop in tomorrow (which is disappointing as it's the last day of my post-every-day-month) I just wanted to wish you all a happy new year. Hopefully 2009 will be a hell of a lot better for all of us! Mon, Dec. 29th, 2008, 11:53 pm Retro Reviewing: 5x5 SG-1 Season 4 - Ep 1-5
Sun, Dec. 28th, 2008, 10:04 pm "Just a Phase" (unaired pilot)
So in the midst of all the YouTube hopping I was doing yesterday I came across a very ... strange ... pilot which I wanted to share with you all.
Called "Just a Phase" it's the story of a young teenage boy and his supposed realisation of his sexuality. "The most popular girl in the school wants to date him - but his new male teacher seems like the better choice." The show never got picked up and thank god because there is something decidedly off about it especially the scenes between the boy and the new teacher. Nothing explicit happens and the teacher is the ideal of a caring and intelligent man but there is enough subtext to realise that there is a decidedly uncomfortable tone to the relationship.
The reason I wanted to share it with you all is that Kavan Smith (aka Major Evan Lorne) plays the teacher and object of affection! His intro is hilarious. I've seen enough interviews with him where he says he's done countless forgettable pilots but this is the first one I've actually seen.
You can find it here on YouTube or under the cut. (Kavan first shows up seven minutes into part one)
( Watch here ) Sat, Dec. 27th, 2008, 09:55 pm Torch Song Trilogy
I spent most of today in bed not because I was sick or anything but just because I could. I had nothing to do and nowhere to be. I haven't been able to stay in bed all day since... probably since I was a student. It was great!
Now, movie recs...
I finally got to see Torch Song Trilogy. It's a movie I've wanted to see for years but never had the chance. Well I sat down last night to finally watch it and it was brilliant! It's about Arnold Beckoff (played by Harvey Fierstein with his very distinctive voice) a gay jewish drag queen living in New York and trying to find love and respect in the world around him. I had wondered how the movie would stand up considering it was made in 1988 but it is both a testament to the honesty of the movie and how little our world has changed that the movie not only made me laugh out loud but also had me in tears.
I think what makes the movie is that it is about one person and their story. Yes, it deals with the greater issues of homophobia or gay stereotyping but it does it through Arnold's life and family. It makes it personal to him and in doing so it speaks about all gay people. The scenes between Harvey Fierstein and Anne Bancroft (who plays his mother) were particularly poignant and difficult to watch. They shout and scream at each other and while I can't help empathising with Arnold and how difficult the relationship is, I think the film also raised an important point about how, as gay people, we often cut people out of our lives because we don't share our lives with them. Seriously brilliant movie. You all need to see it. ETA: Everyone also needs to check out Fat Rants by Joy Nash posted over at themollyedge's journal. Just... Amazing! Fri, Dec. 26th, 2008, 02:23 pm Not so soniced!

Having to wait for Doctor Who to download is killing me. I knew I should have watched yesterday. Anyway, off to Lady D's now to play her new Wii, drink tea and generally act like nine-year-olds. P.S. Did I mention three different people gave me watches for Christmas?... I think the universe must be trying to tell me something.
Daughter of P.S. I also watched Elle Enchanted this morning. Was really quite funny. I definitely have a crush on Anne Hathaway. Thu, Dec. 25th, 2008, 09:49 pm Christmas Must Be Tonight

Taking time out from falling asleep on the couch to wish everyone a Merry Christmas (or just merry Thursday)!!! I hope you all had a very happy and not too stressful day. I spent the day with the whole family - something we haven't done since we were kids - but I have to say it was wonderful if very tiring. Lastly I want to share with you a really nice version of one of my favourite Christmas songs. Not too many people know it so I hope you all enjoy.
ETA: Didn't get to watch Doctor Who special so please</em> no spoilers! Will post my usual reactionary comments one I have ep. Thanks. Wed, Dec. 24th, 2008, 06:28 pm Hands up who loves this icon?
I just finished making tiramisu for the first time. Well nearly finished, it just needs to set before I add the chocolate topping.
I love tiramisu but have never made it before. I realise now this was probably due to the fact that a) I'm not actually that inclined to cooking even if I get a delicious dessert at the end and b) subconsciously I knew the coffee would soak through my skin and I'd be utterly hyper!!!!
Wheeeeeeeeee!
Now just have to finish wrapping presents, print some photos for brother, do Christmas eve visiting to Lady D and keep my fingers crossed that I've been good enough to have Santa visit tonight.
(I may love tiramisu but it turns out I can't spell it!! Three tries before I got it right. I'm blaming the coffee.)
Tue, Dec. 23rd, 2008, 11:13 pm ...by any other name.
mapleshy asked me why I call my work crush paper bag princess and I thought I'd share the reason with you all. One of the earliest conversations we had was about the book The Paper Bag Princess. I hadn't heard about it before but the plot goes like this. Princess Elizabeth was planning on marrying Prince Ronald, who was practically perfect. Then along came a dragon, who destroyed her kingdom, kidnapped Ronald, and burned all her clothes so that she had no choice but to wear a paper bag. She tracked down and outwitted the dragon. She challenged the dragon to burn forests with fire and to fly around the world. The dragon completes the tasks but after flying around the world a second time becomes tired and falls asleep. Elizabeth then saves Ronald. He didn't even thank her and told her to come back to rescue him when she looked more princessy. Then Elizabeth realized what a bum Ronald was, told him off, and went off to live her own life.
I love the idea and the ending of this book and ever since then it kinda summed up who paper bag princess is to me. Tue, Dec. 23rd, 2008, 01:47 am I watched!
Oh my God... I just... words cannot... ::flails helplessly:: Mon, Dec. 22nd, 2008, 10:13 pm FYI it's a time of giving, not taking!
(I'm using my first NCIS icon for this because if anyone can kick the shit out of the people who did this it would be Gibbs.)
I was going to post about how awesome today has been - because it was pretty awesome - that was until mum came back from shopping to tell me her bag got robbed! I mean it's three days before Christmas, shit like this should not happen!
She's fine but she had about €500 in cash and another €200 in vouchers (I've talked to her before about carrying cash but she would never usually have that much). No credit cards or anything but jesus with that much money I think they've made out alright.
The shop security were great and caught the two women (!!!) on CCTV with a really clear picture. The cops are involved and as I said mum is fine but I just want to kill them. Mum is being very positive about it though and just saying this will get rid of any bad luck for the next year (with a side of hoping the robbers hands will turn black and fall off... hey, she might be philosophical about it but she's no saint!)
And to finish this post off with some aforementioned awesome. - My old manager and his girlfriend (who I now work with) got engaged on Saturday. So happy for them.
- Went out to lunch today with a few people from work and paper-bag princess was totally flirting with me. I can't textually render the lunch we had because it was soo... ::hands:: ... I dunno, how do you explain flirting? There was teasing comments and eye contact, sitting a little closer to each other than needed (actually just being a little too close to each other all day!), her hand resting that little longer on my shoulder for some reason I can't remember and then finding it's way back there more than once for no reason at all. I feel like we're both waiting for the other person to make the first move and I hope I'm not just imagining it. I've never dated anyone I've worked with... actually that's a lie, when I was a student I did but this is a 'proper' job and, well, I don't want to fuck either of them up.
Sun, Dec. 21st, 2008, 05:12 am So happy!

5am in the morning and I'm just back from the best night out I've had in a long time. I may be a little tipsy right now but it's totally worth it when I've spent the best part of the last twelve hours with old friends I love completely and new friends who are already making my life better. I really couldn't ask for anything more! Sat, Dec. 20th, 2008, 02:17 pm Australia

Having just watched T4's Australia special I have realised two things... 1. I have a ridiculous crush on Hugh Jackman. 2. I really really need to see this movie. |
